What is Aniimo?

Aniimo is a free-to-play, open-world creature-collecting RPG set on the continent of Idyll. Playing as a Pathfinder, you catch wild Aniimo using devices called Aniipods, then raise, evolve and battle them. Its signature mechanic, Twining, lets you fuse with any Aniimo you've caught and move through the world as that creature — flying, climbing, swimming or burrowing depending on what you've collected. More than 200 Aniimo are available at launch, with species varying by location, weather and time of day, and a 3-player real-time mode called Egg Heist sends teams hunting and battling across the Lost Isles.

Developed by Pawprint Studio, Aniimo launched on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox on September 15, 2026, followed by iOS and Android a week later, after racking up more than 30 million pre-registrations worldwide and over 1 million on Steam alone. It peaked at roughly 128,000 concurrent Steam players around launch. Nearly three weeks later it's still pulling strong numbers instead of fading: Steam reviews sit at 'Mostly Positive' across over 23,000 reviews, and on October 4-5, 2026 it ranked #18 on Steam's most-played chart with a daily peak around 109,595 players and roughly 62,000 people playing at the time of checking.

Why it's blowing up

  • Rare pre-launch scale: more than 30 million global pre-registrations and over 1 million on Steam before release.
  • Zero cost to try — free-to-play from day one on PC, PS5 and Xbox, with mobile following a week later.
  • A genuinely different hook: Twining lets you become the creature you caught rather than just command it from the sidelines, setting it apart from other creature-collector games.
  • Staying power on Steam's charts — still inside the top 20 most-played games nearly three weeks after launch instead of the usual post-launch drop-off.

How to play Aniimo

  1. Download the free client

Install Aniimo through Steam or the Epic Games Store (about 40 GB) — there's no purchase required to start playing.

  2. Create your Pathfinder

Build your character and get your first Aniipod, the device used to catch wild Aniimo.

  3. Catch your first Aniimo

Approach a wild Aniimo, weaken or distract it, then throw an Aniipod and time the catch. Species change by location, weather and time of day, so explore widely.

  4. Twine with a captured Aniimo

Open the Aniimo menu and Twine with a creature to see the world through its eyes and use its unique movement ability, such as climbing, gliding or swimming.

  5. Build a varied team

Collect Aniimo with different elements and different traversal skills — you'll need both to fight effectively and to reach areas gated by fire, water or height.

  6. Try multiplayer content

Once you're comfortable with catching and Twining, join the 3-player 'Egg Heist' mode for real-time PvEvP races and battles in the Lost Isles.

Beginner tips

  • Don't judge a new catch only by its battle stats — check its Twining ability in the Exploration tab first, since a 'weak' Aniimo might be the only way to reach a whole section of the map.
  • Keep your team elementally varied and cover multiple traversal types at once — for example a climber for fire-gated areas, a glider for cliffs, and a swimmer for water crossings.
  • Learn both Command Mode (directing your Aniimo in battle) and Twining (becoming it) early — puzzles, hidden chests and tough fights often require switching between the two.
  • Revisit the same spot at different times of day or in different weather. Aniimo spawns change with the environment, so a location that looked empty at noon can be full of catches at night or in rain.
  • Use your Homeland RV plot to grow crops and decorate between expeditions — it's a low-pressure side loop if open-world exploration gets tiring.
