What is WARDOGS?

WARDOGS is a large-scale tactical shooter from developer BULKHEAD, published by Team17. Up to 100 players split across three teams fight King of the Hill-style over randomized 2x2km Control Zones, with tactical gunplay, vehicles, base building and destructible terrain. Every player starts each life with cash to buy a custom loadout, and teamplay actions like reviving squadmates or holding the zone pay out in cash that persists between matches.

It launched into Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026, and sales and concurrent player numbers were unusually strong for a new multiplayer shooter: millions of copies sold within weeks and Steam concurrent player counts in the hundreds of thousands, keeping it among Steam's most-played games well into October.

Why it's blowing up

  • Explosive early sales: reportedly 1 million copies sold within a day of Early Access launch, 2 million within five days, and 3 million within about 18 days.
  • Very high Steam concurrency for a new release — a reported all-time peak of 428,666 concurrent players just three days after launch, and daily peaks still in the hundreds of thousands a month later.
  • A three-team format (instead of the usual two-side shooter setup) that changes how fights play out, since a third faction can attack from an unexpected direction at any time.
  • A cash economy that rewards teamplay directly (reviving, transporting teammates, holding objectives), which guides and reviewers point to as a standout feature versus other tactical shooters.

How to play WARDOGS

  1. Buy and install the game

WARDOGS is a paid title on Steam ($39.99, appid 1867240), currently in Early Access. It is PC-only (Windows) at this time.

  2. Learn the objective

Matches are King-of-the-Hill style: three teams fight over a randomized 2x2km Control Zone within a larger map. The team with the most players inside the zone earns points, and the first team to reach 100 points wins.

  3. Spend your starting cash on a loadout

Every life you start with cash to buy weapons, gear, utility items and vehicles from the vendor. New players get a 50% 'new recruit' discount on purchases until level 9, so gear up early while it's cheap.

  4. Pack ammo efficiently

Rather than filling your backpack with pre-loaded magazines, carry two magazines and a stack of loose ammunition — the game automatically refills your magazines from that stack over time, saving backpack space.

  5. Earn cash by playing as a team

Reviving squadmates, transporting friendlies toward the zone, and contesting the Control Zone all pay cash — healing a teammate with a bandage earns more than the bandage itself costs. Yellow 'Hot Zones' on the map pay double cash for any action performed inside them.

  6. Use squad comms and vehicles

Squads get a private comms channel enemies can't hear, which is worth using for coordination. For vehicles, turret-style weapons (mortars, tank guns, stingers) traverse faster with A/D keys than mouse alone, and helicopters can be set so mouse swipe controls roll and pitch.

Beginner tips

  • Buy gear while you still have the new-recruit 50% discount, which lasts until level 9.
  • Carry two magazines plus loose ammo instead of a backpack full of pre-filled magazines — loose ammo auto-refills your mags over time and frees up space.
  • Prioritize actions inside yellow Hot Zones on the map — any action performed there earns double cash.
  • Keep your loadout light early on: heavy gear blocks tactical sprint, and light gear makes it easier to learn movement and gunfights.
  • Hover over vendor and inventory items to check which XP type they reward, and use gear matching the specialization you want to level up fastest.
  • If you're defending or attacking a base, note that regular doors auto-close after 30 seconds but large gates do not — close large gates manually or they'll stay open.
